Frequently asked questions
How much tax do self-employed people pay in Austria?
Income tax is charged on your profit minus the profit allowance, by the tariff: in 2026 tax-free up to €13,539, then 20%, 30%, 40%, 48%, 50% and 55%. On top come SVS social insurance contributions of about 26.83% of profit plus accident insurance. On a €40,000 profit that's roughly €5,600 income tax and €10,900 SVS.
What is the profit allowance (Gewinnfreibetrag)?
15% of profit up to €33,000 stays tax-free, so at most €4,950 - without having to invest (Grundfreibetrag). For higher profits there's an additional investment-based allowance; this calculator doesn't include it.
Why do I get an SVS back-payment?
SVS first charges provisional contributions based on an earlier year's profit. Once your income tax assessment is out, it recalculates. If your profit was higher, you pay the difference - often years later. That's why it pays to set the amount aside as you go.
Does this work for the small-business exemption (Kleinunternehmer)?
Yes. The small-business exemption only covers VAT (up to €55,000 revenue). You still pay income tax and SVS on your profit as usual.
How accurate is the result?
It's an estimate with simplified rules: only self-employment income, no tax credits like the Familienbonus, no minimum SVS base and no other income. For your tax return, your tax advisor's or the tax office's calculation counts.
